Sometimes what I need from music is to be arrested, to be held static in time engaging with the notes, construction and intent, separated in that moment from the world, everything external colored over with a film of grey ambivalence, the environment just a faint annoyance of intrusion. But sometimes all I want to do is shake my hips, wave my arms in the air and just smile and enjoy the rhythms as I move around, making up the steps as I go along and who goes a shit about whoever happens to be looking. Case in point is this contemporary release from @thesoulsteppers who are making all the right noises that this aul fella is digging hard. Hailing from Brighton, this ten piece is delivering a brace of wonderful original compositions on this debut release. Straddling the line between soul, funk and Jazz they have already been making waves with the likes of Craig Charles giving them air time and with a packed gigging schedule they are drawing new fans to their vibe across the soul and wider music world
The B-side ‘Slow It Down’ is a mid tempo groove akin to the likes of Barrio Joyride ‘Cool It’ or Maria Sanchezs ‘Sensation’ . A stepper that would sound perfect for an afternoon in the sun enjoying what life has to offer, it displays the whole bands chops, Vocals clear as a bell, Horn section filling out the spaces with deep tones that have jazzy curves to them all wrapped up in an unhurried manner...i can see this one being a repeat play over the next months.
A-Side is a doozy of a workout that is just the ticket for that hip shaking vibe i mentioned earlier. This is a groove in the vein of so many big Nu-Disco hits and i am sure it will convert a lot of folk to their cause. With a kick start like a 9ts Chicagoan day time soap opera, it quickly ups the tempo and groove into a party tune for all you modern day disco divas – and sure even if that aint your bag you will find lots to enjoy here if you are willing to let yourself go...dancing with friends, smiling, sharing - ya get the drift...
