The words Brass and Band when joined typically send a shudder running through me, borne of the time when crate digging for vinyl in Ireland and always having to flip through numerous martial Brass bands that for some reason were always to be found in charity shops in the north east corner of the island. i am under no illusion that what was contained on those forlorn and dusty releases are anything like what Timmion are offering us here. Whilst this is a brass band i daresay there are no kilts nor busbys on or near the musicians laying down the funk here and man oh man do they knock it out of the park on both sides delivering an excellent twofer that should be in everyone's collection. Top side - Conrads Lesson - is a mid tempo jazzy stepper that has hints of a laid back Pharoah Sanders rifff and some absolutely delicious brass solos breaking out all over the place til all is brought back together into a glorious funky bop kind of movement, restrained and sedate, the power in this one is strong. Flip over for 'Ward to Ward' and a more orthodox funky brass wig out. This side lollops along and its joyous as the uplifts kick in and again we are treated to beautiful solos. This puts me in mind of something a New Orleans Brass Band would lay down behind the scenes cause its just pure enjoyment and sounding like its done for the heck of it... And of course take a look at the label and just clock at who is doing the production....sure fire winner!!!
